Jules Hoffmann

Introduction of Prof. Jules Hoffmann

Professor Jules Hoffmann is the Laureate of Nobel prize physiology or Medicine 2011. He is the professor of University of Strasbourg and senior researcher at Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). He is the academician of French academy of science and Académie française. He dedicated his work to the study of the genetic and molecular mechanisms responsible for innate immunity in insects. The work of Hoffman and associates has provided new insights into the defense mechanisms that organisms, from the most primitive up to humans, employ against infectious agents. By demonstrating the marked conservation of innate defense mechanisms between insects and humans, the work initiated by Hoffmann and his collaborators has led to a re-evaluation of the role of innate immunity in mammals. With Bruce A. Beutler and Ralph M. Steinman, Hoffmann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2011.

Sino-French Hoffmann institute was established in 2013 when Centre national de la recherche scientifique, France signed a collaboration memo with Guangzhou medical University through the introduction of professor and president Xinhua Wang.

Di Chen is an associate researcher at the Sino-French Hoffmann Institute (SFHI), Guangzhou Medical University. She has been working at Guangzhou Medical University since 2014, when she received her PhD from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. From August 2017 to August 2019, she spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Strasbourg in France, under the co-supervisor of Nobel Laureate Jules Hoffmann. In 2019, She helped Professor Jules Hoffmann establish the Jules Hoffmann Research Group at SFHI. Her main research interest is to study the molecular mechanism of innate immune recognition and response to oncogenic cells using Drosophila melanogaster as a model.

(Research interests)

Recently, innate immunity has been found to be also important against cancer progression. However, the detailed mechanism of recognition and reaction remains largely unknown. Drosophila melanogaster has proven to be a powerful model for the study of innate immunity since the major factors and mechanisms involved in innate immunity, such as TOLL, IMD, NF-κB and Janus tyrosine kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathways are evolutionary conserved from insects to humans. Further, insect immunity only relies on innate immune response, which makes it a simple and robust animal model for studying innate immunity against cancer. Our project aim is to explore the potential mechanisms of recognition and response of innate immunity against cancer.
